My shortcuts gift this year included Alex Raven. I might throw her into the mix just because I'm thinking about her atm. So, let's say I go with:

Ceirdwyn
Alexa Bond
Grace Chandel
Rebecca Horne
Alex Raven

I'm taking Rachel MacLeod out because she's a movie character, not a series character, IIRC. Please correct me if I'm not remembering correctly.

Amanda might qualify because of the relative paucity of stories on FFN and AO3. Since numbers aren't being counted from 7D, that means that most of the "back in the day" stories also aren't being counted.

Are there any others that either of you would like nominated? I'm an old Highlander fan.

Lovely slate! Two thumbs up.

You've covered all the Marlows characters I would have nominated, but I still have a slot set aside for the Marlows, so are there any others you would like me to add to the mix?

My potential nominations:

Return to Night - Mary Renault: Hilary Mansell, Lisa Clare, Elaine Fleming
Purposes of Love - Mary Renault: Colonna Kimball, Valentine
Hilda Tablet and Others - Henry Reed: Hilda Tablet, Elsa Strauss

Lois Sanger, Miss Cromwell, Esther Frewen, Miranda West, Miss Keith?

or...replace with any of:

Jan Scott, Rose Dodd, Karen Marlow, Ginty Marlow, Monica Elliot (I confess, I sort of want Monica making furious love to a largely oblivious Ginty...but that might be just me I'll get my coat again)

Monica/Ginty, your wish is my command! (Er, in terms of nominations anyway.)

If there's anyone you decide you definitely want nominated, give me another nudge, but otherwise I'll pick from that slate when the time comes.

If you have the extra slot, I'm sure we can find the characters to fill it.

Rachel MacLeod
Cassandra
Claudia

Whichever other ones were on brightknightie's list that didn't make it onto mine, as well.

Thanks!

Are you still interested in The Tomorrow People? I'll be nominating it (naturally) and would be happy to include any of your character favs, if you want.

Okay, so that's

Annie Devlin
May-Ling Shen
Rachel MacLeod
Cassandra
Claudia Jardine

(There are a ridiculous number of Rachels in this canon, by the way--Rachel Ellenstein in the movies, the aforementioned Rachel MacLeod, and Rachel McClelland.)

Highlander the Series

[personal profile] gehayi 2015-01-24 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Annie Devlin (1 story on AO3)
May-Ling Shen (1 story on AO3)
Rachel MacLeod (3 stories on AO3 [though it doesn't look like she's starring in any of them])
Cassandra (67 complete stories in English on AO3, 32 on FFnet)
Claudia Jardine (6 complete stories in English on AO3)

I'm unable to check the number of stories on FFnet containing Annie, May-Ling, Rachel or Claudia as they are not listed as characters by FFnet's filters...though that probably says something all by itself.

Emelan -- Tamora Pierce

[personal profile] gehayi 2015-01-24 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Rizuka fa Dalach (lesbian woman--3 complete stories in English on AO3, I can't find any on FFnet)
Dedicate Lark (lesbian woman--131 complete stories in English on AO3, 7 on FFnet)
Evumeimei Dingzai (woman--20 complete stories in English on AO3, 16 complete ones on FFnet
Daja Kisubo (lesbian, depicted as girl and woman--68 complete stories in English that are 1,000 words or more [out of 156 complete stories]; 21 complete stories in English are 1,000 words or more in length on FFnet [out of 39])
Trisana Chandler (aromantic asexual, depicted as girl and woman--69 complete stories in English that are 1,000 words or more in length [out of 159 complete stories] and 39 complete stories in English that are 1,000 words or more on FFnet)

It's worth noting that FFnet does NOT group all the Emelan books under the same heading, so there are separate listings for different books and sets in the series: The Circle of Magic (4 books), The Circle Opens (4 books), The Will of the Empress (1 book), and Melting Stones (1 book). There's no listing at all for Battle Magic, the newest book in the series.

On the bright side, I didn't turn up any count below one! On the down side... basically, every character in HL who isn't a CIS-male is eligible for this game?

HL has *3,300* stories on the AO3 right now.

  1. ~11.0% : Amanda is tagged in 364 stories

  2. ~02.2% : Cassandra is tagged in 72 stories.

  3. ~01.7% : Tessa is tagged in 56 stories.

  4. ~01.5% : Rebecca is tagged in 48 stories.

  5. ~01.2% : Alexa is tagged in 40 stories.

  6. ~00.5% : Amy is tagged in 17 stories.

  7. ~00.5% : Ceirdwyn is tagged in 15 stories
  8. .
  9. ~00.3% : Anne is tagged in 11 stories.

  10. ~00.3% : Grace is tagged in 11 stories.

  11. ~00.2% : Claudia is tagged in 7 stories.

  12. ~00.2% : Michelle is tagged in 6 stories.

  13. ~00.0% : Randi is tagged in 3 stories.

  14. ~00.0% : Angie is tagged in 3 stories.

  15. ~00.0% : Rachel (MacLeod) is tagged in 3 stories.

  16. ~00.0% : Nefertiri is tagged in 2 stories.

  17. ~00.0% : Annie is tagged in 1 story.

Thank you for being interested in nominating for HL!

:-) And thank you very much for so excellently untangling the Rachels! :-)

I remember what a big impression Rachel MacLeod made on me in "Homeland." When she returned in "Promises," I jumped up off the dorm TV room couch and shouted. (Of course her scene in "Deliverance" was Eurominutes-only at that time, and I was in North America.)

I know that the Watcher notes in the DVD extras are hardly canon, but I've long enjoyed their suggestion that Rachel went on to a career in Scottish politics... especially this past year! :-)

So, whom are we going to bump for Amanda?
argentum_ls: Matthew McCormick (Default)

[personal profile] argentum_ls 2015-01-24 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
My potentials:

Highlander: the Series
  • Ceirdwyn
  • Alexa Bond
  • Grace Chandel
  • Rebecca Horne
  • Alex Raven

    The Tomorrow People (2013)
  • Cara Coburn
  • Sophie Coburn
  • Astrid Finch
  • Irene Quinn
  • Marla Jameson

    Wolfblood
  • Jana Vilkas
  • Meineir
  • Maddy Smith
  • Shannon Kelly
  • Ceri Morris

Two potential slots remain open. Barring other ideas jumping out, I'll probably fill them with the other Tomorrow People canons.

Edited: Swapped Astrid for Charlotte in the TP '13 noms.

Cassandra would be my own choice to bow out to make way for Amanda, if it were my call.

For myself, personally, though, I feel that Amanda, as the most frequently written woman character in HLdom, doesn't need this ficathon in the profound way that many of the others do, if that makes sense. I feel that Amanda is not as disproportionately and conspicuously neglected as some of the others.

You make a good point. Amanda is consistently one of the most appearing characters in Shortcuts. And there's nothing barring her from being in a story here, regardless of whether she's requested. We have the opportunity to focus on the less written characters, so we should.

    >"1) What about non-human characters with an eligible gender presentation?"

I believe that neither humanity nor biology are required.

The Machine from Person of Interest was specifically listed as an example of an eligible character. The Machine is an AI (non-human).

1). Non-human characters that fall within our gender guidelines are welcome.

2). The gender variants of playable characters from RPGs are eligible, as long as they meet other requirements for rarity in representation. Since they make up a version of canon, I would consider it more along alternate universe than Rule 63.

Better you than me with Axiothea; she strikes me as a mouth-piece for some of the author's more tedious political views. When she gets away from that she's a genuinely engaging character (I like her telling Niko "I could see it was getting unkind not to mention it") but I'd not like to write fic about her, in case it turned into Hit The Character With The Clue-Bat Aimed at the Author.
