Hotshot space pilots, first contact with aliens, multiple awesome female characters, canonical f/f pairing involving the main character, mysteries and politics and action adventure -- There's SO MUCH to love in these books!

Look what I found! The Kindle version of First Flight. (Just the first book, alas.) I might need to pick it up, now that you've reminded me of the series. :)
ETA: Well, because I have no self-control, I bought and reread the first book. Oh, Claremont. Desperately needed an editor. Still a lot of fun, though. Wish I had the other two at hand.
